Sesquicentennial Performance of Nielsen Wind Quintet Music of Thuille and Roussel, with guest pianist Hyunsoon Whang
Founded in 1998, the Equinox Chamber Players ensemble is one of St. Louis' most dynamic performing chamber groups. Their multi-cultural music crosses international boundaries while bridging the gap between classical music and storytelling.
Equinox celebrates community life with commissioned works inspired by environmental surroundings, historical and present day culture, and everyday heroes.
With a unified goal of both educating and entertaining, Equinox is committed to bringing this music into the community concert halls, schools, senior centers and other living and educational centers.
Equinox was featured in the PBS documentary Continental Harmony, has aired on PBS, NPR and local radio stations, and has collaborated with some of St. Louis' finest institutions, as well as national and international associations. The ensemble has been featured in the Chamber Music America magazine in an article on the synthesis of classical and "world" music, the St.Louis Magazine and St. Louis Women on the Move. Members of the Equinox Chamber Players include Paula Kasica (flute), Ann Homann (oboe), Jeanine York-Garesché (clarinet), Stephen Hanrahan (horn) and Donita Bauer (bassoon).
Pianist Hyunsoon Whang is an active performer and a dedicated teacher. Since the age of twelve, she has performed more than 600 concerts in America, Canada, Europe, Iceland, Japan, and in her native Korea. Critics have praised her as "the kind of player who appears to immerse her entire being in the music," and as one who has "always delivered with grace and beauty."
Whang studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts, the St. Louis Conservatory, The Juilliard School, and earned a doctorate from Indiana University. She is on the faculty at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma where she holds the McMahon Endowed Chair in Music. Besides piano, she enjoys practicing yoga, watching baseball and being a virtual mom to her daughter Courtney who is a college student in Chicago.
