Works by Rameau, Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Albéniz, J. S. Bach, and Rachmaninoff will be performed by three winners of the "Young Artists' Piano Competition" of the St. Louis area.
Alex Chen Division I Gold Medal Winner Student of Zena Ilyashov
Alex started piano lesson at age 5.5 with teacher Grace Yin. After one year of study, Alex entered the MMTA state competition and won Honorable Mention.
Alex has been learning with teacher Zena Ilyashov since age 8.5. Mrs. Ilyashov opened his eyes and always challenged him to be the best he could be. Alex won the MMTA state competition for 3 consecutive years from 2014 to 2016. In 2016, Alex won Honorable Mention at the 1st St Louis Instruments Competition which includes all instruments for all age levels. Alex has been awarded the Steinway Piano Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year at Community Music School of Webster University.
During summer, Alex often attends music summer camps to expand his horizons. He participated in Webster University’s Chamber Music Encounter for 3 summers. In the summer of 2016 he received a scholarship and attended 2 weeks of summer camp at International Institute of Young Musicians in Kansas University.
Besides piano, Alex plays cello in the Rockin’ Strings orchestra at Crestview Middle School. People know Alex as an energetic guy who always has an eager to learn. Alex’s other interests include math, tennis, playing video games and travel!
Geoffrey J. Ladue II
Geoffrey J. Ladue II Division II Gold Medal Winner Student of Alla Voskoboynikova
Geoffrey J. Ladue II is a proud student of Alla Voskoboynikova and a sophomore at Lafayette High School. As a youngster in Indiana, Geoff won first place in the Hartman-Stickley and Gene-Marcus piano competitions. He also received the highest ranking for five consecutive years for ten piece audition programs sponsored by The National Guild of Piano Teachers. Here in the St. Louis area, Geoff has received superior rankings in many competitions sponsored by SLAMTA, MMTA, and MTNA. Geoff’s passion is classical music but he also enjoys ragtime. In 2016, he won second place for his renditions of Swipesy and Solace by Scott Joplin at The Old Time Piano Music Competition at Ole’ Miss. Ilya LItvin is Geoff’s trombone teacher and under his guidance, Geoff has achieved many accolades in All Suburban Band, State Solo and Ensemble and was selected to be the substitute trombonist for the SLSYO for the 2017-2018 season. At Lafayette, Geoff is an honor student, a member of the Lancer Regiment, and first chair trombonist for the Wind Ensemble. Geoff thoroughly enjoys the game of golf and was excited to be a member of the Varsity Golf Team this past spring. With deep appreciation and gratitude to his family and teachers, Geoff would like to dedicate his performance to them.

The Bel Canto Chorus will perform its annual Christmas holiday concert on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 4:00 PM in the sanctuary of Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis, MO. Doors open at 3:30 PM. Appetizers, desserts, and light refreshments will be served following the performance. The cathedral is located at 1210 Locust Street. Free parking is available in a lot adjoining the church. Metered parking is available on surrounding streets. This concert features a performance of ‘Peace on Earth: A New Gloria’ by Dr. Bruce Vantine for mixed voices and brass accompaniment. Additional seasonal choral favorites will complete the program. Tickets are available in advance through members of the chorus, and on sale at the door for $15/admission.

17-year-old Alexandra Rice has been a student of Zena Ilyashov for 10 years. She is a multi-year winner of the MTNA Missouri State Junior Piano Competition, and she won the Alternate title for the West Central Division MTNA 2012 Junior Piano Competition and received Honorable Mention for the West Central Division MTNA Piano Competition in 2014. She also placed 2nd in the 2016 MTNA Missouri Senior State Piano Competition. Alexandra also won the St. Louis Area Music Teachers Young Artist competition three times by taking the Gold Medal in all three Divisions. In 2010, she won first prize in the 22nd Annual Starr Young Artists Competition, and in 2014, she received an Honorable Mention in the International Institute for Young Musicians International Competition held at the University of Kansas. In 2015, she was awarded second prize in the Fite Family Young Artists Piano Competition. Recently, Alexandra received first prize in the 2016 SIUE Young Pianists Competition and was named a finalist in the Midwest International Piano Competition. She also received first prize in the 2016 US New Star Etude Competition. Alexandra is a multi-year winner of MMTA State Honor Auditions and has played solo performances in the St. Louis Classical All-Stars series at the prestigious Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis. Alexandra has also participated in numerous piano and chamber festivals and programs. In 2015, she was invited to play with the St. Louis Youth Symphony at Powell Hall for their spring concert. Alexandra has also performed in master classes for renowned musicians such as Jane Solose, Alexander Peskanov, Anton Nel and Christopher O’Riley. She has twice performed live on Kansas Public Radio. She is the recipient of the Gregory A. Courtney Piano Scholarship, the Monticello College Foundation Scholarship, the Arden and Harry Fisher Piano Scholarship and since 2012, an annual scholarship from the G. A., Jr. and Kathryn M. Buder Foundation. A freshman at Princeton University, she is currently pursuing a degree in Operations Research and Financial Engineering and a certificate in piano performance. In her free time, Alexandra enjoys dancing ballet, writing poetry, skiing and spending time with her family and friends.

A performance of Sanctuary, by John La Montaine , words by Theodore S. Ross and Charles Atwood Campbell will be featured, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the completion of the edifice of Christ Church Cathedral. Refreshments will be served by the St. Martha’s Guild following the service.
